The workshop is a fairly typical metalsmith's setup, although John's vast collection of handmade pattern tools and punches is unique in the world.  "I started making my own little dies and punches about 25 years ago and it sort of grew from there...it's not about saving time so much, more about creating a product that can't be copied easily, like coins and banknotes."

Millers techniques also include hand forging, hand engraving, fusing, pattern rolling and cuttlefish casting, processes now largely overlooked by most jewellers today. His preferred metals are silver, 18ct and 22ct gold. He has lectured on metalsmithing techniques and stone setting and has access to some of the finest gems, pearls and diamonds available.
